Variable dimensions
This series is part of a group of works where the artist points to space folded upon itself to acquire a degree of awareness that restores its materiality rather than its symbolic significance, a kind of ersatz weight, a virtuality that has become physical, tangible.
A hybrid between the iconic sign and the space it occupies, that which works as its support, the body. The result is a decrease or approach which in principle acts from a distance. This approach produces a tension which gives an internal rhythm to photography, a swing between two places and two temporalities.
For example, in Badlands , a number of wrinkles follow every one of the folds of a mountain landscape overlapping the background fold with a real, physical fold in the foreground. The postcard image shows an eroded plateau whose formation dates back to the Upper Cretaceous, about 75 million years ago. It was formed essentially by sedimentary deposits (sand, silt, clay) solidified by little foundation. Paying attention we see how the paper support, the material the postcard is made with, has in turn another type of erosion, this time on a human scale and produced by the fingers of one hand.
In Lightning over Arizona , a storm serves to illuminate the flaws and cracks in the surface of a postcard. The rays we see in the picture mix with cracks and fissures meticulously made with a razor blade. This postcard is displayed backlit so that the two lights, the real and the figurative are mixed in a unique visual surface.
